Screening the Future – Remodelling the Business of Film Distribution
London Business School
The Centre for Creative Business in conjunction with Screen International hosted a one-day symposium to evaluate the most promising delivery models for film in the digital world. The conference included:
- Participation in a problem-solving forum of forward-minded film executives and top business thinkers
- Dissection of the potential revenue streams from new content platforms and compressed/subverted release windows
- Participation in hands-on case study analysis of recent studio release, devising optimal marketing and distribution scenarios
This symposium was aimed at studio-owned and independent film distributors, producers and executive producers from across the industry, entertainment retailers, film financiers, venture capitalists, consulting, accounting and legal services, and everyone interested in the future face of film. It attracted over 100 high calibre delegates.
The conference set out to examine the ways in which emergent social trends and digital technologies might change non-theatrical film distribution. Speaking at the event were, to use Screen International's Mike Gubbins' phrase, the 'industry heavyweights', including the VPs and CEOs of major studios and production companies.
The entertaining and informative presentations were followed by some lively panel discussions and heated debates as well breakout sessions to tackle the specially commissioned MBA level case study 'Home Truths'.
'Screening The Future' proved to be a unique and prescient event to outline what appear to be the early days of film distribution in the digital domain on its journey of self definition.
There are increasing options available to the producer, distributor and marketer in this arena and, as Prof. Olav Sorenson, Professor of Strategy and International Management at London Business School concluded, 'the future simply requires experimentation'.
